The University of South Dakota (USD) believes that a student success is essential to achieving great things. USD is committed to helping distance students succeed through a variety of programs focused on each students’ specific needs.

Academic Career Planning Center (ACPC)

Each student at USD is assigned to an academic advisor through the Academic and Career Planning Center. Academic advisors are an essential piece to assisting students through the academic processes as well as connecting the students to the resources available to them. In addition to academic advising services, academic support is provided through:

  • ACPC offers a tutoring program in a variety of subjects such as math, biology, chemistry, general education social sciences (criminal justice, psychology, etc.) and more through zoom meetings with tutors.
  • Smarthinking is an on-demand 24-7 tutoring option that provides support for most general education classes, as well as many upper division math, sciences, nursing, and business courses. Smarthinking is accessible through USD’s Student Portal.
  • Learning Specialists are individuals who help students develop successful learning strategies and study skills, study habits, time management, overcome math anxiety, and more.
  • Supplemental Instruction- Peer-assisted study sessions help you with difficult first and second year courses.
  • Writing Centerprovides free assistance to students with all aspects of writing. From brainstorming ideas for a paper to final stages of proofreading and editing for academic essays and reports to non-traditional and creative writing assignments, students can request one-on-one assistance with brainstorming, developing ideas, organizing, drafting, citation formatting, and/or using correct grammar and punctuation. There are also several writing workshops available online through D2L. Distance students can submit assignments in the online writing center dropbox via D2L and receive feedback about their work or they can make a video conferencing appointment to talk live with a consultant.   • Math Emporiumoffers one-on-one and small group tutoring is offered for many math courses. Students connect via Zoom (https://usd.zoom.us/my/themathemporium) Monday-Thursday between 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Center for Career & Life Design

The Center for Career and Life Design has the resources to help students design their career journey, develop essential workforce competencies, identify internships and experiential activities, and secure their place at a job or destination that fulfills their expectations. Career appointments can be booked with Career Coaches through Coyote Connections.

Coyote Careers is USD’s career services manager powered by Symplicity. Students use Coyote Careers to apply for all types of jobs (on-campus, work-study, part-time work and full-time careers), access career resources, get job recommendations based on their interests, learn about career events and much more. Coyote Careers also has an app students can download for additional convenience.

Coyote One Stop Shop

Coyote One Stop is an online destination designed to be used by USD faculty, staff, students, prospective students and parents to locate information quickly. Through this website you can request assistance and find answers to your questions. The University of South Dakota Student Counseling Center (SCC) is committed to providing short-term counseling and consultation services in a safe, welcoming, and affirming environment, conducive to the development and empowerment of a diverse community of learners. Students seek services at the Student Counseling Center for a variety of reasons.Some of these include anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, substance use,and past or recent trauma.Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) includes over 150 brief, effective, educational sessions covering over 50 common topics and skills related to mental health, wellness, and substance use issues. TAO Includes interactive sessions, mindfulness exercises and practice tools all aimed at helping you achieve your goals.

Gallagher International Center

The Gallagher International Center helps students by providing them with the needed resources to expand their academic experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting. The center aims at preparing students to excel after graduating from USD and explores different opportunities for students to add to their resumes such as:

  • Alternative Week of Off-Campus Learning (AWOL)
  • Study abroad programs
  • Undergraduate research and creative scholarship
  • Competitive awards and fellowships

Information Technology Services

USD Technology Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week via phone, email, or online submissions via Coyote One Stop. This support includes campus and personal computer troubleshooting for hardware and software issues.

Military & Veteran Student Services

This resource center proudly assists service members, veterans, and their families with applying for and receiving education benefits. There are prioritized programs and services to help military and veteran students integrate into student life as smoothly as possible. Whether you’re studying on campus or via an online or distance program, military and veteran students have access to academic and social support such as tutoring, student veterans’ clubs and organizations, Veterans Affairs reintegration support, and peer monitoring programs. Counseling services are offered that are confidential and offer a broad range of counseling, outreach and referral services for current and prior military personnel and their family members. Services provided include individual, couples and family counseling, support and educational groups and referral to other resources.

Presentation Center

The Presentation Center is dedicated to helping students gain the necessary skills and confidence to cohesivity and effectively communicate a message to their intended audience. The presentation center offers a great range of different services to USD students, varying from one-on-one meetings to workshops, including:

  • Structured feedback

South Dakota Oral History Center

The USD Oral History Center hosts a collection of approximately 5500 interviews recollecting indigenous memories and experiences, starting as early as the 1890s. The collection is a valuable record of the historical, social, and cultural legacy of the state of South Dakota that students may use for research or educational purposes.

USD Wellness Center
