My Natural Haircare Routine: Best Styling Products for Fine Hair - Gurl Gone Green (2024)

My natural hair care routine for fine hair is here! I shared about this a while ago but I am updating it to include all the most up to date tips for those with fine hair as well as best styling products for those with fine hair.

I’ve teamed up with my girls Lisa from The New Knew, Sarah from Whoorl, Kate from Root & Revel, Caroline from Olive You Whole and Kristina from Love & Zest to highlight green, yet effective food, beauty and lifestyle products that are rocking our natural mama worlds.

Like I said, I have fine hair. But, the beauty of doing a post like this with several other bloggers is that we all have different hair types. So if I don’t have your hair type, there is bound to be someone who does.

Since my hair type is fine and thin. I’m all about adding body to my hair! Give me the volume. I also don’t like products that add a lot of weight to my hair. I want something that will be weightless and provide lasting volume.

If this is your hair type, then you’re in the right place! I’ve been searching for the best natural hair products for fine and thin hair for the last 8 years since going green and I’m pretty sure I’ve discovered the holy grails.

*Oh and side note I’m a hair stylist! Talking hair is kind of my jam. It’s one of the first things I notice about people. So know you’re in good hands.

Tips for Those with Fine Hair

  • Volume While Sleeping- When you go to bed put your hair up in a high ponytail for added volume the next day. Especially if you shower at night and blow dry your hair.
  • Blow Drying- Blow dry hair with your head upside down to help add more volume.
  • How To Curl Hair- Curl hair with a smaller barrel then you would normally use to help keep the curl longer.
  • How Often To Shampoo- Shampoo hair every other day, to every third day.. It’s best to give hair a break between shampoos. However, with fine hair, it can really get greasy quicker. The trick is to use dry shampoo between washes.
  • Products To Avoid- Avoid using any heavy pomades, creams or hydrating shampoos and conditioners. These can really weigh the hair down and cause the hair to fall limp.
  • Specific Hair Styles For Making Hair Look Thicker- Adding layers on top of the hair can really help to amp up the volume, especially on the crown of the head where fine hair tends to lay flat. Also, shorter styles above the shoulders can make the hair look thicker. Adding waves to the hair with a curling iron can also help to add volume and thickness to the hair.
  • Getting Highlights- Adding highlights can really give the appearance of thicker hair, plus it also makes your hair feel thicker because it roughs up the cuticle of the hair and gives hair more grit. Since fine hair is so slick, roughing up the cuticle is really important to add some thickness to it.

Best Shampoos & Conditioners For Fine Hair

If you’ve been in natural beauty for a hot minute you know it can be like rolling the dice when trying to find a decent shampoo and conditioner. Thankfully it has gotten a lot better. Natural shampoos and conditioners have come a long way!

And this is the brand I come back to over and over again.

Evolvh Ultrashine Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner- This is the shampoo I’ve been recommending for any hair type. I’ve used it and I have fine, thin hair. My sister has used it and she has thick, fine hair. I have a friend who loves it and she has coarse thick curly hair. It just gets the job done! Especially great for someone who is used to mainstream shampoos and conditioners and wants one that is going to really get their hair clean. I can go multiple days between shampooing my hair with this shampoo. My hair feels so bouncy and clean. And the clean feeling lasts for days! Get it here!

Best Styling Products for Fine Hair

I’ve found some great styling products since going natural with my hair routine as well.

Step 1: Add in some lasting volume on damp hair.

Innersense I Create Lift Volumizing Foam- So this is very similar to a mousse. I pump some out into my hands and then run it through my roots to mid shaft on damp hair before I blow dry my hair. It gives my hair so much volume and lasting body. I blow dry my hair upside down, this adds a ton of extra volume. As I’m blow drying I will brush my hair downward with this brush. I’m obsessed with this blow drying brush! brushing your hair helps to prevent the product from becoming crunchy and spreads it out evenly. If you have curly fine/thin hair you could just scrunch up with your hands so you don’t ruin your curls.

It really gives hair this long lasting volume and your hair feels like it has some grit to it! Snag it here!

Step 2: Curl your hair

Using a smaller barrel curling iron than you normally would, curl your hair in small sections. Used the Innersense Whipped Creme Texturizer throughout your hair after curling to add texture and shine. Get it here!

Step 3: Add in a sea salt spray for more texture.

Innersense I Create Waves Texture Spray- Innersense just knows how to create exceptional hair products. The founders are stylists themselves which definitely helps. They know the hair and they know what it needs. This salt spray is their newest product and I couldn’t wait to try it! I used it once and knew it was going to be a fave.

A lot of texture or salt sprays can weigh the hair down a bit. Not this one. It gives my hair some decent hold, almost like a subtle hair spray, and then it adds texture. Not heavy texture that gets super crunchy. This is effortless texture that makes it feel like your hair just did it on it’s own.

I love spraying it in my hair to break up my curls after I curl my hair. It gives my hair a tousled look. I’m excited to travel because I don’t even think I would bring a hair spray- just this! It offers enough hold. This would work great for those with curly hair too as it would help to liven up your natural curls. SO excited to have this in the summer months! Get your I Create Waves Texture Spray here.

Step 4: Finish with some finishing spray for added hold and volume.

Josh Rosebrook Hair Spray- The best natural hairspray I’ve found peeps-let it be known! It’s in pump form, there’s no aerosol that’s good…trust me(bad for you and the environment). I love the smell! It has a list of essential oils but the ones that stick out to me are the rosemary and lavender. I love knowing exactly what I’m breathing in, no hidden fragrance!

Second, it doesn’t goop up when you spray. It actually has a mist feel. Yeah, pretty cool. Lastly, it just works. With my hair being fine and thin, this product delivers hold throughout the day, volume, and doesn’t get crunchy…you know what I’m talking about. It’s just good stuff. I would recommend this for anyone transitioning from a mainstream hairspray. You need it, trust me! Grab it here!

Step 5: Add some dry shampoo if needed.

Primally Pure Dry Shampoo- When looking for a dry shampoo I want something that will give my hair lift, and volume and take away oiliness. I also want it to be somewhat reasonable in price and available in brown and blonde.

Well, I found it! I’m obsessed with Primally Pure’s Dry Shampoo. I use the one for light hair, but I love that they have a dark option as well. It really gives my hair body and bounce. I sprinkle it on in the mornings when I don’t wash my hair and then I brush it through. I prefer using a teasing brush because it’s smaller and really helps to get the product spread evenly. Plus, it smells fresh! They use essential oils of grapefruit, lavender and peppermint. If you’ve been searching for a good dry shampoo look no further! Get your Primally Pure Dry Shampoo here and use code GURLGONEGREEN10 to save 10%!

This sums up my daily natural hair routine. You don’t have to use the salt spray and hair spray on the same day. Sometimes I just use the salt spray and sometimes I just use the hair spray. Sometimes both!

***Innersense Detox Hair Mask- This is my new favorite hair product I discovered last year! It’s unlike any product I’ve used for my hair. Having fine/thin hair my hair can easily get weighed down. This instantly helps to detoxify it and remove build up. Leaving it bouncy and not weighed down. I use this every week to really help give my hair a good clean. I start at the scalp and massage in and then work my way down my hair shaft. Then I leave it on for 5-10 minutes. You will love it! Say hello to clean, bouncy hair! Get it here!

Low EMF Hair Dryer- This is such a great all around hair dryer. I really like to get a low EMF one if I can. Blow dryers are a big culprit when it comes to EMF exposure. If you want to learn more about the harmful affects of EMF’s check out my blog post here. Bonus you can get it on Amazon! Get it here.

Teasing Brush- If you have fine/thin hair then this brush is your best friend! I use it to tease my hair on top to add volume. It works so well! Get it here!

Blow Dry Brush- This brush I discovered a year ago and I haven’t looked back. I use it every time I blow dry my hair- I can’t be without it! It helps to dry my hair faster! Get it here!

Curling Irons- I love these curling irons. They work great, come in a variety of sizes and aren’t outrageously expensive. Also. a side note for those who have fine/thin hair. I use a 3/4 inch barrel on my hair. I’ve found that this size is really great for those who have fine/thin hair. It does give you a more curly look initially but then I brush it out and it looks more tousled. I like it though because my curl will actually stay. Otherwise if I curl it with something bigger my hair tends to fall easier. I’ll curl my hair and then brush it out with the teasing brush. It gives me a wavy look versus ringlet curl look. Snag one here!

Flat Iron- I really love this flat iron! I’ve been using it for a while and it just works so well. It has slightly rounded edges so it’s really versatile for curling or flat ironing. I find to get the really undone imperfect waves, you need a great flat iron. Also, preferably one with slightly rounded edges. This also helps to seal in moisture and not strip your hair. So crucial if you flat iron your hair a lot or have color treated hair. Trust me, you will love it! Get it here!

FAQ’s For Fine Hair

  • How Can I Get Volume In My Roots? You can get volume in your roots by adding a mousse to the roots or a volumizing spray and blow drying hair upside down to really maximize volume. You can also get volume to the roots by adding highlights to your hair. This really helps to rough up the hair cuticle as I’ve mentioned and help the hair to puff up more instead of lay flat. Also by using a round brush when you blow dry your hair and pulling the hair away from the scalp is another way to add volume.
  • How Can I Make My Fine Hair Look Thicker? Adding highlights as I’ve mentioned is a way to give the appearance of thicker hair. It creates more dimension in the hair instead of it looking flat, plus adds texture and volume by making it stand up more on the head instead of lying flat. Curling your hair with a smaller barreled curling iron and then brushing it out can really add thickness. Wavy hair always looks thicker than straight hair. Also, making sure you use a mousse and blow dry your hair can really make hair look so much thicker too.
  • Is Mousse Or Gel Better For Fine Hair? Mousse is a much better option for fine hair, compared to gel. Gel can harden in the hair and weigh it down, as opposed to mousse that can really beef it up and give it volume.
  • What Is The Best Lightweight Styling Cream For Fine Hair? I love Innersense Organic Beauty’s Whipped Creme Texturizer for fine hair. I’ve been using it for years. I love how it doesn’t weigh down my fine hair but just adds some subtle shine and texture to it. It’s perfect right after curling my hair, it adds definition and helps to smooth out flyaways without it looking greasy or losing volume. Get it here!
