Amorim sends another Man Utd reality check to fans with Liverpool title message (2025)

Liverpool won their 20th league title on Sunday to draw level with Manchester United and Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim has sent a reality check to the club's supporters

Ruben Amorim has insisted that Manchester United's "ultimate goal" is to win the Premier League, but he has admitted they cannot afford to "think too far ahead". Liverpool have drawn level with United for title wins after clinching their 20th on Sunday.

However, United currently sit 14th in the league and look set to suffer their worst domestic campaign in more than 50 years. "The first thing is to focus on ourselves and not on the other teams," Amorim said after United's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

"The next thing is to be really honest. We are in different levels in this moment, but then explain that everything can change. I remember when I start seeing Premier League, was the opposite.

"So everything can change. We need to focus on step by step, not try to think too far ahead. We have an ultimate goal that is winning the Premier League.

"Again, I'm not crazy, I know it's not going to be next year, but we are trying to build something and the small things are really important and we did that during this year.

"We need to improve next year. It's really important for the fans, we know that, but we need to be honest with them and to work hard every day."

Reflecting on the draw with Bournemouth, Amorim felt United deserved to pick up all three points. "It was tough in the beginning, high intensity, pressure from the opponent," he said.

"We had some difficulties there but then during the game we were improving. We had our opportunities, we didn't score.

"But then in the second half especially, we had a sense of we push the opponent to their own half, we create situations, and we manage to save a point. But I think if you look at the game, I think we lost two points.

"Of course [I'm frustrated with the goal United conceded]. If you look at our last games, it's always like that. Something that we [do to] help the opponent get the advantage and then it's really hard to score goals. But we move on, they did a great effort to recover one point."

United can now turn their attention to their upcoming Europa League semi-final clash with Athletic Bilbao, with the first leg set to take place on Thursday. And Amorim believes there are some similarities between Bournemouth and Bilbao.

"These teams are quite similar in the high pressure, the way they press, so it was a good game to prepare for one of the most important games in our season [against Athletic Bilbao]," he explained.
